Beer sales: 1st quarterly growth in 4 years

Beer sales, aided by the World Cup, saw their first like-for-like quarterly increase in sales in four years, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) revealed this morning. The BBPA said more than 2.2 billion pints were sold during April to June, the best performance since the fourth quarter of 2008. Beer sales were 625 million pints up on the first quarter and 63 million pints up on the same period in 2009


Molson Coors warns drink may be demonised

In a interview with the Telegraph Mark Hunter, CEO of the UK business of Molson Coors, has warned that we are in danger of demonising a few drinks with friends. Beer sales have fallen every year for more than two decades and are likely to decline again in 2010 and Hunter suggests that ‘the prognosis for this industry is not a healthy one'.


Cameron launches 'Big Society' project

This will have a far-reaching impact upon various aspects of community life including the way in which the on-trade interacts with its customers. Officials will be on hand to help groups to run pubs threatened with closure, the aim being to preserve a feeling of community and protect and enhance neighbourhoods. Trade bodies have cautiously welcomed the proposals.


Pub failures more than double in Q1 2010

Research produced by accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy has found that 23 pub, bar and club companies failed in Q1 2010 compared with just 11 in the same period last year.


Refund likely following ruling on music royalties

The Copyright Tribunal has upheld the decision of an earlier hearing that the UK's pubs, clubs and hotels should benefit from a £15m repayment of the cost of playing recorded music. The initial action had been brought by the British Beer & Pub Association and the British Hospitality Association and every little helps.


C&C(Magners Cider Ireland and Tennant Caledonian Brewery Scotland) to more actively promote Gaymers

C&C group is to promote its newly acquired cider brand Gaymers via a £5m marketing programme during the remainder of 2010.


Fullers announces refinancing

Fuller, Smith & Turner has announced that it has entered into a new £100m bank facility. The new five-year facility, which is said to be on 'highly competitive terms', is some £18m larger than the existing facility that it will replace, which had been due to expire in November.


Budweiser to offer 4% beer

AB InBev is to follow the successes registered by Becks Vier and Stella Artois' 4% beer by offering a variety of Budweiser at 4% ABV. The drink will be targeted at young adults.
