The Smoking Ban: Advice & Guidance

With so much confusion surrounding the new legislation, ipa is pleased to recommend a useful guidance source to educate members about the best way forward. The Government produced guide, Everything you need to prepare for the new smokefree law, will be mailed to all English based businesses in April but can be downloaded direct from this website today.

Smoking Ban Summary

  • It will be against the law to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places, workplaces and public and work vehicles. There will be very few exceptions.
  • Indoor smoking rooms in virtually all public places and workplaces will no longer be allowed.
  • Managers of smokefree premises and vehicles will have legal responsibilities to prevent people from smoking
  • The new law will require no smoking signs to be displayed in all smokefree premises and vehicles
  • Failure to comply with the new law will be a criminal offence. Penalties and fines for smokefree offences will range from £50-£2500.
  • Local councils will be responsible for enforcing the new law. They will offer information and support to help businesses meet their legal obligations under the new law.
